facts

“Depression is an illness of loneliness, and Fellowship is an important component to recovery. In the chaos of a breakdown, to have the resources of Fellowship available would make a world of difference. It won‘t eliminate your depression, but it will enable you to cope with it.” Andrew Solomon, Author and recipient of the 2001 National Book Award for The Noonday Demon: an Atlas of Depression

THERE IS A CRISIS IN OUR COMMUNITY

According to national experts in 2002:
  • Nearly 1 in 5 adults in America suffer from a mental, behavioral or emotional disorder.
  • 1 out of 3 individuals who are homeless in the US suffer from a severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia or manic depression.
  • Approximately 3,400 New Haven adults have a serious mental illness (such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, substance abuse, depression.)
  • Between 65 — 75% of persons with serious mental illness can recover enough to develop a meaningful and useful role in the community.
  • Medications are effective in controlling symptoms and have become the focus of treatment.
  • Recovery oriented rehabilitation programs like Fellowship provide valued community roles for persons whose symptoms are stabilized.
  • Stabilized patients and their families are demanding access to recovery oriented rehabilitation services at Fellowship.
